Urban comedy -- young, edgy, streetwise, ethnic, with hip-hop bling and no blue collars -- has happened occasionally in Kalamazoo venues. But a weekly urban comedy night?

"I think it's the first time it's ever been done in Kalamazoo,'' said Brant Flores, booking agent for downtown Kalamazoo's Laughing Post comedy club.

Flores, who also is the owner of Chicago's Riddles Comedy Club, is putting together "Comedy on the Block'' Thursdays for The Laughing Post.

Starting Sept. 6, every Thursday night there will be "all urban comedy",

The Laughing Post, located in the basement of the Shakespeare Building, has already been bringing in urban comics -- considerably more than did the former tenant, Gary Fields' Comedy Club -- for its regular Friday and Saturday night comedy.

Urban comics do well with the regulars at The Laughing Post, Flores said. But he hopes a night focused on urban comedy will bring in a new, younger crowd.

A lot of the younger people seem to be bigger fans of the urban comedy than of mainstream,'' he said, ``because the faces are more recognizable and ``it's a younger group of comics.''
